October is National Sensory Awareness Month! Here are 10 Ways YOU Can Help Us Celebrate.
1. Celebrate Your Blessings My son, Gabriel, was diagnosed with SPD at 2 years of age. We were able to receive services through our local hospital’s outpatient rehabilitation center with an Occupational Therapist who specialized in Sensory Processing Disorder, Britt Collins (co-author of the Sensory Parenting books). Upon initial evaluation, my son could not feel pain, hot/cold, the sensation of being hungry or full, etc. He feared touching sand, and filled his pockets with rocks at daycare.

7. Help Your Child to Get Involved Help your child create a fundraising campaign through the sport they play by gathering pledges for goals, baskets, or runs they make. See how 16-year-old Roman has raised close to $9000 for SPD through soccer. Before his high school season, Roman called on friends and family and walked neighborhoods in San Diego gathering pledges to support his Play For Others program. By joining the Play For Others team, donors committed to fund a charity designated by Roman based on the number of goals he scored in his high school season.

8. Send Us Your SPD Story We hope you will share your journeys, struggles, and joys of raising a child with SPD. Telling your story may help other families who are struggling to get answers. Knowing that there is hope will provide some encouragement and relief to those who are just starting out with a diagnosis. Please email your story, along with a few pictures of your child and/or family to Susanne Geiler at info@spdfoundation.net. Enter “My Story” in the subject line. We would also love any poems or videos clips you may have that describe a sensory kid. If you wish to send a video clip, please contact us for instructions before sending. By sending us these stories, photos, and videos you are giving us permission to allow us to use these on our website, in marketing materials and e-blasts. We will be posting different stories on our website each month. If your story is chosen, Susanne will be in touch with you to let you know.
